How long have you been an artist? What is your specialty? Where do u find inspiration?
I’ve been a creative person all my life so it’s hard to put a date on it. I guess you could say when I chose to attend a vocational school to focus on commercial arts, that was my first major decision that put me on the path I’ve been on. Throughout my career I’ve sort of been a jack of all trades (or a master of none, depending on how you look at it) but for the past year or so I’ve really been focusing on improving myself as a illustrator. So right now, at this moment, I’d say my specialty is portrait illustrations. Instagram has been huge for inspiration, there’s so many great artist out there. Also I’m kind of a nerd and a horror buff so movies, video games, and pop culture in general get me motivated to create.
Do you have a job in the art industry? If So, what’s one thing you don’t like about it? If no, where would your dream job be?
Currently I’m the Lead Designer for a local magazine out of Columbus. I also do some freelance for companies around the city. One thing that I think is always a issue in the industry is finding folks that are willing to pay you what your worth. Exposure doesn’t pay the bills, and you would try to haggle a surgeon for a cheaper price. I think my dream job would be illustrating from home full time. (comics, gig posters, spot illustrations, etc.)
Do you have a favorite Artist?
Francis Bacon is my favorite all-time artist. His work is haunting and beautiful all at the same time. As for artist on Instagram I’d say Matt Cunningham (top notch collage work) @moon_patrol, Scott Bouncristiano (beautiful limited color palettes) @scottboun, and Johnathan Wayshak (great comic/tattoo artist) @wayshak
What is one accomplishment you’ve had in your life? Does not need to be art related.
I have a wife and two kids that I’ve somehow tricked into putting up with me. That’s my greatest accomplishment.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?
I’m working from home, illustrating full time.
I want to do big things and I think if I keep doing what I’m doing, I’ll get there eventually.
If you could meet and talk to any person in the world, dead or alive, who would it be?
I would of loved to have dinner with Vincent Price.
How is one way you make money with your art?
Outside of the day job I do have a red bubble store where I sell prints, t-shirts, and ridiculous throw pillows. They take most of the profit but do all the work, so I can’t complain.
If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
My wife’s family is originally from the Azores and I have yet to visit. It seems like a paradise.

What is your favorite brand of art supply? Whether it’s a brand of pencils or brand of camera or software
Outside of the typical Adobe products, micron pens, and Wacom cintiq I’d like to mention Zig Woodcraft chalk markers. I spent a decent amount of time doing chalk art and those were amazing.
Any advice for young artists?
Try your best to not compare yourself to other artist, only compare your new work to your previous work. Keep pushing yourself and always have at least one project your working on that is for you and you alone.
